What is a birthworker?
A birthworker (also known as a doula) is a non-medical support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant people, individuals, and families throughout reproductive transitions and journeys. Birthworkers support people during pregnancy, labor, postpartum, abortion, and more!
Vrindavani
Vrindavani is a queer non-binary full spectrum birthworker supporting people throughout their reproductive journeys – including prenatal, birth/labor, postpartum, abortion, and gender affirming care.
Vrindavani has been a practicing birthworker for over 10 years in California, having been trained and educated by various organizations, collectives, and midwives and scholars throughout the years including Indigemama Ancestral Healing, Sumi’s Touch Midwifery, Cornerstone Birthwork, Bay Area Doula Project, Lifewerq Project, ANTE UP!, Divine Birth Wisdom and completed a Indigenous Lactation Counselor training in Summer 2024. Vrindavani is a member of Gender Justice LA and Roots of Labor Birth Collective.
Outside of birthwork, Vrindavani earned a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies conducting oral histories on transgender abortion experiences and two Bachelor degrees in Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies. Vrindavani is also involved in reproductive justice organizing with the California Coalition for Women Prisoners and has published research based on their work — “Controlling Reproduction and Disrupting Family Formation: California Women’s Prisons and the Violent Legacy of Eugenics.”
Vrindavani also loves to farm and garden and is building relationships with plants and trees around the rivers in the Nisenan Maidu Miwok and Patwin territories.
